The power is still out in parts of the county, including sections of Broadway stretching from Damascus Church all the way to C.C. Wright School. And ice is still on bridges and other low lying areas across Wilkes, so please be careful when out driving this morning.Gift Card Scam Busted By PoliceA gift card scam was broken up this week by Wilkesboro police. At Lowes Hardware, a man had been going through the store gathering up items and passing it off as stuff he had purchased. He took the items to the return desk and exchange them for gift cards. At the time of his arrest, he had $1225 worth of gift cards accumulated. Loss prevention officials put together tapes of his activities and turned things over to Wilkesboro police, who made the arrest. 31-yr-old Jerry Kenneth Wyatt was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses.Foxx Helps To Pass Natural Gas Amendment5th District Representative Virginia Foxx took a step on Thursday toward lowering natural gas prices for people here in the area. Foxx and the rest of the House Agriculture Committee passed an amendment to the Commodity Futures reauthorization. That amendment gives the Trading Commission the authority to investigate market manipulations during any time of price increases. It also raises the penalties handed out for such manipulations. Foxx said that she wanted to do everything possible to keep the cost of natural gas low for families during the winter season.Weapon Goes Missing From CarA wildlife officer called sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday after discovering that a rifle was missing from his car. The officer had seized the weapon from a suspect and planned to turn it in the next day. Instead when he arrived home, the rifle was gone. Information was turned over to deputies and the investigation continuesChristmas In Wilkes Needs HelpSeveral hundred people took tags from the Christmas in Wilkes Angel Trees over the past month, helping needy kids during the holiday season. However now that the deadline has passed, the organization has a problem. 163 of the tags that were taken have not been turned back in, which is a problem since the gifts were supposed to be distributed today. If you did take a tag but haven’t bought a gift yet, please do that this morning and be sure to call Christmas in Wilkes and let them know. The number to call is 927-2969.Christmas In Wilkes Weather ChangesWith the winter weather that hit the county, some changes have been made for Christmas in Wilkes. Families had been called and asked to pick up their childrens' gifts today, but due to the icy conditions this morning, they can do that later this afternoon. Or if you can't make it out to pick up those gifts today, please call Christmas in Wilkes at 927-2969 and you can arrange another time to do it.Break-In At Myers TireSheriff’s deputies were called out to the Myers Tire location in Millers Creek on Thursday, after reports of a break-in. Would be thieves had pushed open one of the doors to the business, without damaging the padlock that was on it. However it was a wasted effort, as the door had been blocked from the inside by several cabinets and tools. Nothing was taken from the building but damage was placed at $100. That investigation is ongoing.Man Finds Rifle StolenA Wilkesboro man called sheriff’s deputies to report a theft, one that happened over a month ago. The man told deputies that his rifle had been stolen, although he couldn’t say when exactly and there was no evidence of a crime. He also couldn’t provide suspects, because so many people had been in the home. That investigation continues. Amnesty Week Is In Effect For Late FeesSome good news for anyone whose holiday schedule has kept you from returning that overdue library book. The Wilkes County Library is holding an Amnesty Week, cutting fines in exchange for donations. For each can of food donated to the Library this week, $1 will be deducted from any overdue books, tapes or other items on loan. That will run from today until this Saturday December 10th, after which the regular late fees will go back into effect. And for those who don't have late fees but want to help out hungry people, you can drop off supplies at the library as well. The library is located at 215 Tenth Street in North Wilkesboro.Regional NewsTwo People Facing Counterfeiting Charges In DobsonAuthorities in Dobson have broke up a counterfeiting ring and now two people are facing charges. Galax police got in touch with Surry County investigators after arresting a local woman for passing counterfeit bills. 38-yr-old Bridgette Morgan of Dobson and 35-yr-old Marvin Clinton Chapell are both in custody facing counterfeit charges, while Morgan is also been charged with obstruction of justice. Surry County officials searched Morgan's home and found several items used in the counterfeiting scheme, including a computer, printer and counterfeit currency patterns. All the evidence was turned over to the U.S. Secret Service.State NewsHighways Safer Near NC ChurchesIt's safer on the highway near churches here in North Carolina, according to a new study released this week. The research, done by Quality Planning Corporation, found that anyone living within a mile of a church is 10% less likely to have an accident than the average driver. The study took into account some 2 million accidents and found that around a church, the rate of accidents tends to decrease. By comparison, anyone living one mile around a restaurant, the study found, is 30% more likely to be involved in a wreck.Green Beret Creator DiesLieutenant General William P. Yarborough died this week. Yarborough, a resident of Southern Pines North Carolina, was responsible for the creation of the Army's Green Beret strike force and also helped to design the winged paratrooper insignia back in 1941. Yarborough had served in the Army for 35 years, also working as commander of the Special Warfare Center during Vietnam. He was 93.NC Court Keeps Christian OathPeople testifying in cases will still swear their oath using the Bible, thanks to a ruling yesterday in North Carolina Superior Court. Judge Donald Smith tossed out the ACLU's lawsuit, which had called for other non-Christian texts to be used for the oath, saying that the group had no legal grounds to file it in the first place. The lawsuit was taken out in July, as the ACLU said it was acting on behalf of its' members across the state.Prayer Vigil Held For ActivistMany people have lost friends and family to the Iraqi conflict. Yesterday, members of the student and faculty body at Guilford College gathered to hold a prayer vigil for one specific person. Activist Tom Fox, a member of a Christian peacemaking team, was abducted by a group near the end of November. Now the "Swords of Righteousness Brigade" have announced they will execute the hostages on Saturday unless America agrees to a trade of captives. Starting at 7am Thursday morning, people came throughout the day to the Moon Room, to pray and remember Fox, who worked with the nearby Quaker community.Rabies Scare In LexingtonOfficials in Lexington are asking people to stay away from stray dogs and cats, after a rabies scare in the area. The Davidson County Health Department is also suggesting that people who live in the area take precaution with their own animals as well. On December 1st a rabid raccoon was shot and killed in the Denton community, causing the concern. Officials are urging people to be careful, since saliva from a rabid animal can contain the disease and even if your pet wasn't bitten, contact of any kind can leave him or her exposed.Authorities Waited A Day Before Issuing Amber AlertQuestions are being raised today as to why authorities waited before issuing an Amber Alert for Devin and Donovan Reed. The two boys were found yesterday by authorities, safe at their grandparents' home in Durham County. However now comes word that police waited one whole day before putting out the Amber Alert, which has some people up in arms. The boys were taken on Tuesday, after social workers informed their parents that the two would be removed from the home, because it didn't have any power. The boys' father then issued threats to anyone who tried to take his kids and when officials arrived at the home, both the boys and parents were long gone. Officials said that while they couldn't release all the details, they had information that waiting to issue the alert wouldn't cause any problems.Sports HeadlinesHigh School Basketball TonightDepending on the weather conditions, there'll be some high school basketball on the radio tonight. Starmount heads into Moravian Falls, to take on the Wilkes Central Eagles. For the Lady Eagles, this is a chance to keep their unbeaten streak alive at 7-0, while the boys will have a shot at knocking off some of their major competition in the 2A division. We'll be going on the air at 7pm with the McDonald's pregame show and then join Ken Byrd and Keith Briand for the play by play at 7:15.Playoff System Possibly In NCAA's FutureThe face of college football could be changing in the future, after a hearing this week on Capital Hill. The House Subcommittee on Commerce and Trade held a meeting with NCAA officials, inquiring why Division I college football is the only sport without a playoff system. Lawmakers said they weren't going to force the issue, but called on NCAA officials and members of the BCS committee to put together a system soon. Officials said they were open to change but that school presidents would have to approve adding any additional games to the schedule, something they've so far refused to do.Peppers Possibly Out For SundayIn the NFL, Carolina could be missing a major part of their defense when they go on the road against Tampa this Sunday. Julius Peppers is still recovering from an ankle injury, caused by a cut block in last Sunday's game against Atlanta. Team doctors and Peppers himself said that they're not sure if the ankle will be 100% and the defensive end may have to miss possibly two out of the last three games of the regular season.Jake Delhomme Moving UpIn other Panthers news, quarterback Jake Delhomme is slowly making his way into the record books. Delhomme needs 293 passing yards to hit the 10,000 yard mark, which would put him second all time in team history. Former Panther Steve Beuerlein currently holds the record with 12,690 yards.NHL: Hurricanes WinIn the NHL last night, the Carolina Hurricanes continued their winning ways as they beat the LA Kings 3-2. The win improves Carolina's record to 18-8 on the season.NASCAR NewsAround the NASCAR circuit, some changes are in the works for Penske Racing. Kodak has pulled out from being the sponsor for the Number 77 Dodge, leaving driver Travis Kvapil without a ride. Kodak said that the company wanted to take a year long break to give Penske time to field a more competitive team. In other NASCAR headlines, Kurt Busch is getting a new crew chief for next season, as Roy McCauley will take over on the Number 2 Dodge. He'll replace Larry Carter.

Tuesday's Hearsay and Conjecture

Four Wolverines Taken in NHL Draft

If you're not a hockey fan scroll drown, because likely to missed, forgot about, didn't realize it existed, or were too infected with World Cup Fever to acknowledge the NHL Draft occurred this past weekend.

It was a good/bad day for the Maize and Blue.

Good: Three studs taken in the first round. And they're all young! Incoming frosh Trevor Lewis, forward, was taken by the L.A. Kings with pick 17 in the first round. Sophomore defenseman Mark Mitera was picked by the Ducks of Aneheim two slots later at 19. Incoming Freshman defenseman Chris Summers was selected 29th by Gretz and the Coyotes. Late in 7th round, with the 201st pick Billy Sauer went to Colorado.

Bad: Three studs taken in the first round. While none of them were picked high enough to warrant bolting for money, it makes your eye twitch a tad realizing that if these guys have breakout years there's the very real possibility they could all be gone at season's end. Thankfully, the new economic realities of the NHL make it more feasible that they'll stay. Still, it makes me jumpy. Other than Sauer, no other Michigan player was selected during the draft.

The Skinny: Looking at the roster, Michigan is littered with first round picks. Along with the three mentioned above, you've also got Jack Johnson and Andrew Cogliano who were first rounders last year. Three first round defensemen, young defensemen, will certainly shore up the blueline in the long term. The outlook is good for next year's blueline as Johnson, Mitera, and Summers are sophmores or freshman. While Summers will certainly add to the defense, Lewis' appearance will bring more punch to an offense that sputtered badly against top competition.

Of the Three first rounders here's how their stats played out last year.

Mark Mitera (MICH) - (39 GP) - (0G - 10A = 10pts) - (24Pen - 59 PIM) - (+5)
Trevor Lewis (USHL) - (56 GP) - (35G - 40A = 75pts) - (69 PIM) - (+25)
Chris Summers (US-U18) - (59 GP) - (6G - 11A = 17pts) - (87PIM) - (too lazy to calculate)

Least Favorite Draft Rumor

Jack Johnson (#3 2005) for Jordan Staal (#2 2006). While the deal never materialized, it was widely speculated that the Penguins would trade the #2 pick to Carolina for Jack Johnson. Had that happened, the chances of Johnson bolting would have gone through the roof as he and Crosby are good buddies. Fot the Pens Johnson would've immediately stepped in as their #2 defenseman. I have serious doubts that the Pens top three of Eric Cairns, Brooks Orpik, or Ryan Whitney would've been able to keep Johnson off the ice. Thankfully, it didn't happen and Johnson remains in Ann Arbor. I will find whoever started this rumor, then kick them in the jewels.

Fluff for All: A nice little fluff piece on Billy Sauer in the Ann Arbor News. Putting last season behind him. Focusing on the Team. Goal is to win a national championship. yada yada yada.

Just Like The NHL Playoffs, Only Longer
Coaches Want NCAA Basketball Field Expanded to 128

Expanding the NCAA tournament to 65 teams annoyed me a tad, but, what the hell. A play-in game for two small schools to battle each other to the death for the right to get crushed by UConn. Actually, a nice concept. Kind of like cock-fighting, but less humane.

There is a proposal on the table from NCAA coaches association to expand the NCAA Tournament, The Dance, to 128 teams. The evil jackass who presented this abomination was Jim Haney, executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. In addition he proposed selling the children of poor nations for food, melting the polar ice caps to produce more clean drinking water, and that drinking the blood of endangered animals will make you immortal.

Haney stated, "[The expansion proposal is] based on several things. First, there are a lot of good teams worthy of making the NCAA field, and second, the size of 64 or 65 has been in place for a number of years." Great reasons. By that rationale I should have no trouble getting into Yale for business school. These sound like Brigham Young's reasons for more wives and kids.

For once, thankfully, the NCAA has come out against the expansion. NCAA vice president for men's basketball Greg Shaheen said there wasn't much support for the proposal and that many people feel the tournament is the right size as it is. NCAA president Myles Brand, who was bathing in $100 bills and scrubbing himself with a wash cloth made from baby seal pelts, could not be reached for comment.

Amaker is already working on his press conference rationales for why Michigan didn't make the field of 128 should the proposal ever go into effect.

"You Smell That? Napalm, son....."

Even if I'm not overly impressed with the hype surrounding uber-recruit JC, aka, Jimmy Clausen, I love the wide eyed look of the so-called experts that are looking at the stirrings of the Notre Dame sleeping giant. "Scratching their heads at what Ty Willingham and Bob Davie were doing" indeed.

I'm reminded of a line from the classic movie, "Great Santini." "STAND BY FOR A FIGHTER PILOT, RUSS PICKERS!"

"A look at how Notre Dame is being viewed around the country, from places where love has been rare.

Dennis Dodd, CBS Sportsline

Notre Dame is back in terms of success on, off and around the field. This was the biggest "get" of the Charlie Weis era. In less than 1?years on the job, Weis has won nine games, coached up Heisman frontrunner Brady Quinn and won over the hearts of Domers everywhere.

As Clausen himself put it, Weis is why the quarterback came to Notre Dame.

Tom Beaver of GoBlue:

Notre Dame's Junior Day this past winter had at least a dozen top 100 type kids from around the country, whereas U-M's Junior Day had 3-4, all from the Midwest. U-M's Spring Game -- 2-3 top kids, all Midwesterners again ... Notre Dame will again have 12+ (maybe as many as 20), again from all over the country. My worry: if U-M loses all three top road games this season, which it very well could -- at ND, at PSU, at OSU ... recruiting will really get tougher. If any of you, like me, are starting to hear a low-grade sucking sound all the time -- that could be the sound of ND sucking up top Midwest recruits ... ND beats USC for the Nation's #1 HS QB, who is from Southern Cal ... think about that one a second.

David Lassen, VenturaCountyStar.com

It's one more affirmation Weis is going to be a big-time success in South Bend. It's one more indication the Irish are back at the top of the heap in the recruiting wars ?not by themselves, certainly, but in that small group of the most elite.

And it would certainly seem to indicate the USC-Notre Dame series just got a little bit hotter. USC, after all, rebuilt with a coach with an NFL background who came in, recruited like mad and started turning out exceptional quarterbacks (among other talents).

Notre Dame has upped the ante with a coach who had a more successful NFL background, appears to be recruiting like mad (even in USC's backyard) and certainly seems to be heading in the direction of turning out exceptional quarterbacks (among other talents).

Even better, for Irish fans and more depressing, for the USC faithful is that Weis and Notre Dame plucked this quarterback out of USC's back yard, after Clausen at one time apparently favored the Trojans.

Mike Farrell, Eagle Action (Fredo)

How big is quarterback Jimmy Clausen's recent commitment to Notre Dame? It's A-Rod to the Yankees, T.O. to the Cowboys and Shaq to the Heat. It's the Great One to the L.A. Kings, Tiger winning the Masters and Hagler-Hearns. In the college football recruiting world, this is as big as it gets.

When's the last time the nation's most hyped quarterback in years committed to the nation's biggest and most recognizable football program? When was the last time a high school football player committed, and it was mentioned on SportsCenter as a big deal? Who else has had numerous national television features done on him before he even threw a pass his senior year? The LeBron James of high school football, that's who.

What Clausen's commitment does for Notre Dame is obvious. It puts the marquee football program back on center stage and numerous blue-chip recruits will eventually follow Clausen to South Bend. It improves Notre Dame's chances of winning a national title even if Clausen never throws another pass. Clausen's commitment enhances Charlie Weis' reputation as a great recruiter and coach, and it leaves many scratching their heads at what Ty Willingham and Bob Davie were doing. Basically, it puts Notre Dame football where it expects to be -- on the lips of every college football fan.

In the meantime, the echoes are waking in South Bend. Notre Dame is back amongst the elite in college football recruiting -- the way it should be.

Allen Wallace, Superprep

Whether Clausen is a great quarterback in college or not, they are once again competing with truly elite programs for truly elite players. I went into this store called Factory Brand Shoes - a store which carry a good variety of running shoes and a decent variety of sizes. I am loyal customer of Asics and i size if 11 (4e) - not finding it on the shoe rack, I went to ask a customer service agent who was sitting behind the counter. I was shocked by her response - its my lunch time and so, I should come back later and ask her. Boy! - that left me flabbergasted - i never knew that i would have to face such customer service in this country which is so capitalist and so, customers are always considered as kings. Also, I think, she could have told me the same message in a more subtle way. She could have shown some discomfort while answering my question with some reference to her sandwich that she was eating and I could have got the hint.

Anyway, it was the worst form of customer service that one could expect. Do you have any such incidents to share - post your comments.

-- Thyaga

Ron Artest: A Sacramento King

The Sacramento Kings have acquired the services of Ron Artest in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Peja Stojakovic, it was announced by Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

lakingshockeyfans new articles for Sunday, April 16, 2006<a href="http://richardjgibson.blogspot.com/2006/04/dream-double-bill-12-king-of-kings-and.html"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">Dream Double Bill # 12 'King of Kings' and 'The Gospel According ...
According to Nicholas Ray’s biography; ‘An American Journey’ by Bernard Eisenshitz ‘King of Kings’ was originally to be titled ‘Son of Man’, and how they registered the title with the MPAA as Cecil B DeMille had not registered the title ...

<a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12336276/from/RSS/"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">Kings fans bid adieu to Robitaille
LOS ANGELES - APRIL 15: Luc Robitaille #20 of the Los Angeles Kings takes NHL's all-time leading scorer among left wings retiring after 19 seasons.

<a href="http://www.cowsinthebarn.com/archives/001003.html"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">A Meal Fit For A King Of Kings
We're cooking up a storm for a small but lovely Easter dinner.
